Press Releases March 06, 2007 PRESS RELEASE Philly Roller Girls hosting East Coast Extravaganza to benefit HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation Philadelphia, PA -- March 6, 2007 -- The Philly Roller Girls announced today a percentage of ticket proceeds for the East Coast Extravaganza will be donated to HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation through Team Bury the Dragon. The East Coast Extravaganza is a large-scale flat track roller derby event featuring two full days of competition by teams from across the nation. The event will take place March 17-18, 2007 at the Sportsplex in Feasterville, PA. Participants will include Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) member leagues as well as regional rookie leagues applying for membership in the national organization. One rink will feature full-length, regulation bouts between travel teams from WFTDA member leagues, including the Philly Roller Girls. The event will be sanctioned by WFTDA and travel team bouts will count toward the participating leagues’ national rankings. Two additional rinks will host open scrimmages and challenge bouts—half-hour bouts between home teams, special teams and rookie leagues. The challenge bouts will adhere to WFTDA rules, with the exception of the reduced playing time. All events, including scrimmages, will be open to the public, giving fans a chance to see up-and-coming regional derby talent as well as seasoned veteran skaters. A complete schedule of challenge bouts and scrimmages is available online at www.phillyrollergirls.com. A meet and greet for press will be held both Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 - 4:00 PM. Members of the press will have an opportunity to speak one-on-one with skaters from participating leagues on the bridge area between rinks one and two at the designated time each day. About the HERA Foundation and Team Bury the Dragon: The HERA Foundation is a grassroots all-volunteer organization dedicated to raising money for Gynecological Cancer research, awareness, and patient programs, through rock climbing events called Climb4Life. In 2005, local rock climber, Samantha Lockwood was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at the age of 30. Chemotherapy left her bald but it didn’t take away her spirit. Instead of wearing a wig or a scarf to cover up, she had a dragon tattooed on her bald head. When she went into remission seven months later, the dragon was buried under thick curly hair. Samantha continued to rock climb while she was in treatments, it only made sense she partner with HERA and participate in Climb4Life events. Samantha, together with friends formed Team Bury the Dragon in 2006. The team consists of a dozen locals who are dedicated to further the HERA mission not only through rock climbing events in the Philadelphia area but also through various concerts, auctions, parties and now the East Coast Extravaganza. 100% of Team Bury the Dragon’s efforts go directly to the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation. The HERA Women's Cancer Foundation is a 5013c charitable organization. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Each year, ovarian cancer claims the lives of more than 16,000 women, and 25,500 are diagnosed; it is the fourth leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women. Sadly, research into ovarian cancer is woefully inadequate, lagging years behind that of other cancers. Ovarian cancer survivor Sean Patrick founded the HERA (Health, Empowerment, Research and Awareness) Women's Cancer Foundation four years ago to bring much-needed attention and money to the disease. It comprises a diverse group of hard-working athletes with the strength and character to provide serious entertainment for fans while having fun in the process. The league now has over 50 dedicated skaters on four teams: the Broad Street Butchers, the Heavy Metal Hookers, the Hostile City Honeys and the Philthy Britches, plus an all-star travel team: the Liberty Belles, that will begin interleague competition this fall. The Philly Roller Girls are proud members of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), a group representing over 30 all-female, independent flat-track roller derby leagues throughout the United States. About WFTDA Founded in 2004, the WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women's flat track derby by facilitating the development of athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues. The governing philosophy is "by the skaters, for the skaters." Women skaters are primary owners, managers, and operators of each member league and of the association. Operational tasks include setting standards for rules, seasons, and safety, and determining guidelines for the national and international athletic competitions of member leagues.
