Giving with a Purpose

December 7, 2009

Dear Friends,

It is that time of year again when our mailboxes start filling up with holiday catalogs, greeting cards from friends and family, and direct mail appeals from every charity that we have ever given to, as well as some we haven’t.  With over a million non-profit organizations in the United States alone, I am amazed that my mailbox doesn’t collapse under the weight of the annual “appeal season.”  Even my email “mailbox” is beginning to receive solicitations. It seems that the “appeal season” gets longer and longer every year.  My first direct mail solicitation came before I could blow out the candle inside my Halloween pumpkin and I expect I’ll receive one or two after my 2010 New Year’s resolutions are long forgotten.

Despite my lament I do respond, and this year I’ll be giving as much as I can, because I know first hand how important the work of the non-profit community is and how stretched their budgets are.  Just like you and I, non-profit organizations are trying to make every dollar go farther and farther.  We are all trying to make wise spending decisions in our effort to make every penny count.

A great way to give during this holiday and help at the same time is to make a charitable donation to one of your favorite non-profit organizations in honor of those on your holiday gift list.  A donation in their honor to the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation will be acknowledged with a personalized note letting the recipient know that you gave a donation in their honor that will help save women’s lives.  What better way to embrace the holiday spirit than by giving a gift that will fund education, awareness, and research on ovarian cancer?  Now that’s a gift that keeps on giving!

It’s easy, click here, www.herafoundation.org, which will direct you to the HERA Foundation website allowing you to make a safe and secure online donation or mail a check if you prefer.  Just click the “donate” button, then “make a gift now” and you are on your way to helping save women’s lives and doing your holiday shopping in just three simple steps.  Thank you!

HERA Welcomes New Board Member

Ms. Traci Goodwin was elected to the HERA Board of Directors at our September 2009 meeting held during the Climb4Life-Utah in Salt Lake City. Traci lives in Seattle and works as an environmental and land use attorney for the Port of Seattle.  When she’s not working to help the Port improve Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, she is probably racing her rowing shell at a regatta.  She also loves to hike, ski, and travel.  Traci is looking forward to February 2010 when she will be celebrating her 5th anniversary as a survivor of early-stage breast cancer.  We are delighted to have Traci on the Board and we welcome her aboard.

2010 Climb4Life Dates To Remember

Mark your calendars for these upcoming HERA events in 2010 beginning with the 5th Annual Climb4Life Metro DC in March.  The Metro event kicks off on Saturday, March 13th and concludes the following Sunday, March 21st.  Following the Metro DC event is the 4th Annual Climb4Life Colorado, scheduled for the weekend of June 11th-12th.  And next will be the 9th Annual Climb4Life Utah scheduled for September 16th-19th.  Watch our website, www.herafoundation.org for further details on all of our 2010 events.

HERA Scientific Grant Opportunity Update

We recently announced significant HERA funding for a study focused on Type I ovarian cancer.  In response to our call for letters of intent, our Science and Community Grants Committees have invited seventeen applicants to submit full proposals.  Full proposals are due in early January 2010 with an award in the amount of $100,000 to be announced shortly thereafter.

Looking For Volunteers

The HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation is expanding its’ working Board of Directors and we are looking for people interested in being involved with us at that level.  If you have any interest please contact us at info@hera.org and feel free to attach your resume.  Serving on a non-profit board can be a wonderfully rewarding volunteer experience.

From all of us at the HERA Women’s Cancer Foundation, please accept our wish to you and yours for a very happy holiday season and a new year filled with joy.

Sincerely,

Danni Lederman

Executive Director
